Storage racks are used for storing chemicals, products, parts, and raw materials. Improper storage practices and rack failure can result in crushing injuries and even death. The following best practices can keep workers safe:

  1. Inspect shelves and racks regularly to prevent collapse or failure. Look for damaged or corroded vertical and horizontal supports. Unsafe racks should be tagged and immediately removed from service.
  2. Ensure that all racks are properly installed and anchored to the floor.
  3. Avoid overloading racks beyond their designated capacity. Store heavier items on lower shelves to maintain stability.
  4. Stack materials straight and evenly on a level surface to prevent sliding or collapse. Place heavier items closer to the floor for stability. Secure materials with banding, cross ties, or shrink wrap.
  5. Protect the bottom of vertical supports with vehicle guards or barriers. This will prevent damage from industrial mobile vehicles such as forklifts or electric pallet jacks.
  6. Train workers on safe rack loading and unloading to include lifting techniques, proper operation of industrial mobile equipment, and the importance of reporting damage or structural concerns.

Remember, safety doesn’t have to be difficult, simple steps, such as not exceeding the rack’s weight capacity, can prevent injuries and save lives.
