As Illinois farmers enter the harvest season, the Illinois Corn Growers Association is asking state and federal policymakers to explore ways to lower diesel fuel costs for farmers.
The association has asked Gov. JB Pritzker to explore options for reducing diesel costs for farmers transporting crops to market. It also is asking Illinois' congressional delegation to engage with the administration and investigate legislative or administrative mechanisms that could allow farmers to use dyed diesel for qualifying agricultural purposes.
The proposed use of dyed diesel would apply to agricultural activities including transporting farmers' own crops to processors, elevators, export terminals and other points of sale.
The Illinois Farm Bureau and Illinois Soybean Association also are asking state and federal policymakers to explore options for providing temporary diesel tax relief to help reduce transportation costs for Illinois farmers during harvest.
