U.S. Wheat Associates welcomed the markup of the U.S. Senate’s version of the Farm Bill by the Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry, which includes a provision to permanently move administration of the Food for Peace program to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The provision, authored by U.S. Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., was included with bipartisan support as part of a manager’s package at the start of the committee’s August markup.
U.S. Wheat Associates said moving administration of Food for Peace to USDA aligns the program with the agency’s agricultural focus and technical expertise, as well as its experience providing humanitarian assistance.
Amanda Hoey, chief executive officer of the Oregon Wheat Commission and chair of the U.S. Wheat Associates Food Aid Working Group, thanked Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman, R-Ark., and Ranking Member Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn., for supporting the provision and Moran for authoring the amendment.
U.S. Wheat Associates said it looks forward to the continuation of the Farm Bill legislative process as the Senate and House reconcile legislative text and work toward final passage.
