The American Soybean Association has added David Johanson, former chairman and commissioner of the U.S. International Trade Commission, to its government affairs team as international trade adviser.
Johanson brings extensive international trade experience to the role, with much of his career focused on agriculture and trade policy. He spent nearly 15 years at the USITC, including two full terms as chairman.
Before joining the USITC, Johanson served nearly nine years as international trade counsel for the U.S. Senate Committee on Finance. In that role, he advised Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, and worked extensively on agricultural trade matters, including soybeans. Earlier in his career, Johanson practiced international trade law in the private sector, where ASA was among his clients.
Johanson will work on international trade challenges, market access and trade policies affecting U.S. soybean farmers. More than half of the U.S. soybean crop is exported annually, making access to international markets an important component of soybean demand.
ASA said Johanson's experience will support its efforts to protect and expand market opportunities for U.S. soybeans around the world.
