The American Feed Industry Association is reviewing proposed changes from the Food and Drug Administration to its Generally Recognized as Safe ingredient review framework and evaluating the potential impact on animal food ingredient approvals, innovation and the safety of the animal food supply.
AFIA President and CEO Constance Cullman said the organization recognizes the Trump administration's efforts to strengthen the safety and transparency of ingredient oversight.
The animal food industry has worked with the FDA for years to strengthen ingredient review pathways, including the GRAS notification process, with the goals of maintaining a safe animal food supply, building consumer trust and supporting innovation.
As the FDA considers changes to the GRAS framework, AFIA said the agency will need adequate resources, capacity and tools to administer ingredient reviews in a timely manner.
AFIA said it will submit comments on the proposal and advocate for any changes to the GRAS framework to include the resources and process improvements needed to ensure the system works effectively for animal food manufacturers, consumers and the broader food supply chain.
