
Extreme temperatures and potentially record-breaking heat index values are expected to affect Michigan this summer, increasing risks for farmers, farm workers, livestock and crops while highlighting the need for heat safety measures.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services said people most vulnerable to extreme heat include those with chronic medical conditions, outdoor workers, individuals without air conditioning, older adults, infants and children. Exposure to high temperatures forces the body to work harder to stay cool, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses while also placing stress on animals, crops and farmland.
Michigan State University Extension is encouraging residents, particularly those working outdoors, to prepare for dangerous conditions by learning to recognize the signs of heat stroke, heat exhaustion and heat cramps before spending extended periods outside.
The organization noted that heat-related illness can affect anyone regardless of age or health status. It pointed to the death of a Michigan farm worker from heat stroke during the 2020 field season as a reminder of the dangers posed by prolonged exposure to high temperatures.
MSU Extension educators identified several factors that increase the risk of heat stress on farms and other outdoor workplaces, including high humidity, heavy workloads, clothing and personal protective equipment, and individual health factors that reduce heat tolerance.
The organization recommends workers stay hydrated, take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas, replace wet face coverings, wear clothing suited for hot conditions and allow time to acclimate when temperatures and humidity rise rapidly.
MSU Extension also encourages employers to establish written heat stress prevention and response plans. Recommended practices include gradually acclimating workers to changing conditions, implementing appropriate work and rest schedules, providing shaded break areas with clean, cool drinking water and training supervisors and employees to recognize the signs and symptoms of heat-related illness.
In addition to worker safety, MSU Extension noted that prolonged heat can affect gardens, lawns and crop production, increasing the importance of proper watering and other management practices during periods of high temperatures.
The organization also advises residents to prepare for the possibility of power outages during heat waves as increased electricity demand can strain the power grid.
To help producers plan field activities during periods of extreme weather, MSU Extension continues to provide short-, medium- and long-term weather outlooks through Michigan State Climatologist Jeffry Andresen. While developed to assist farmers with operational planning, the forecasts also provide residents with information to prepare for changing weather conditions.
