
The Global Environment Facility’s eighth Assembly in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, concluded earlier this month with a renewed push for integrated environmental investment, signaling new opportunities for livestock and animal feed systems as the world works toward 2030 sustainability targets.
The Assembly, held May 30 through June 6, brought together governments, development agencies, researchers and private-sector stakeholders to align priorities around biodiversity, climate, land and water management. The gathering also launched the GEF-9 replenishment cycle, with initial pledges totaling $3.9 billion for 2026 through 2030.
For grain and feed producers, the discussions highlighted a growing recognition that feed production, livestock nutrition and crop systems are central to both environmental challenges and solutions.
Integrated Approach Gains Momentum
A key takeaway from the Assembly was the need for countries to move away from isolated environmental projects and instead adopt broader systems-based strategies.
That includes linking crop production, livestock systems, water management and soil health into coordinated programs that can improve productivity while reducing environmental pressures.
For feed manufacturers, this shift could accelerate investment in feed efficiency technologies, nutrient recycling and lower-emission feed ingredients.
The Assembly’s focus on blended finance and lower barriers to environmental funding may also make it easier for feed and livestock operations to access capital tied to sustainability outcomes.
Feed Systems Tied to Climate Goals
The Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research, known as CGIAR, emerged as a major scientific partner in the GEF-9 framework, particularly in food, land and water systems.
Its work on sustainable livestock systems includes research on improved feeds, integrated crop-livestock systems and circular nutrient management, all of which are directly relevant to feed producers.
Improved feed formulations can help reduce methane emissions, increase feed conversion rates and lower nutrient losses into soil and water systems.
For feed mills, that could mean increased demand for alternative ingredients, precision nutrition technologies and byproduct utilization as livestock producers look to improve efficiency and meet environmental benchmarks.
Land and Water Management Affect Feed Supply
The Assembly also emphasized land restoration, drought resilience and water productivity, areas with direct implications for feed grain supply chains.
Healthy soils and resilient cropping systems remain critical for corn, soybean meal and forage production, all foundational inputs for animal feed.
Programs under GEF-9 are expected to support regenerative agriculture, sustainable rangeland management and improved irrigation systems, which could strengthen feed ingredient availability in drought-prone and degraded regions.
That is especially important as livestock and feed sectors face increasing volatility tied to weather and water shortages.
Investment Opportunities Ahead
Because GEF programs are country-driven, much of the funding will flow through national priorities and partnerships with agencies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, International Fund for Agricultural Development and World Bank.
That structure could create openings for feed companies, grain handlers and livestock integrators to participate in sustainability-focused projects tied to feed efficiency, emissions reduction and supply chain resilience.
As environmental finance increasingly targets agriculture, feed production is becoming a larger part of the conversation.
For animal feed manufacturers, the GEF-9 cycle may offer both market opportunities and new expectations as global sustainability goals increasingly shape how feed ingredients are grown, processed and used.
