Perdue Farms has completed the dismantling of the feed mill at its Cofield, N.C., facility following an incident that occurred Feb. 21.
The company said the structure was determined to be beyond safe repair after consultations with engineers and independent experts. Dismantling work began April 20 and was completed June 12.
According to Perdue, specialized contractors carried out the project through a controlled, step-by-step process designed to protect workers and the surrounding community, with safety remaining the top priority throughout the effort.
The facility's grain receiving and oilseed crush operations were not damaged in the incident. However, those operations remain temporarily closed because of their proximity to the feed mill. Perdue said the grain receiving and oilseed crush facilities will resume operations once it is safe to do so.
The company said it has continued to work with associates based at the facility to address employment needs as the situation develops. Efforts have included identifying transfer opportunities across Perdue operations for employees who wish to continue working with the company and supporting grain and oilseed crush employees as preparations continue for a safe restart of operations.
The investigation into the cause of the incident remains ongoing. Perdue said it is cooperating with local, state and federal authorities.
The company also acknowledged the support it has received from local leaders, first responders and members of the Cofield community during the recovery process.
