Cereals Canada has resumed its interactive Growing Season Progress Report for the 2026 spring wheat crop, providing bi-weekly updates on crop development across Western Canada through harvest.

The report tracks seeding progress, crop conditions, quality factors and harvest activity across Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, where most of Canada’s spring wheat production is concentrated. Information is collected in collaboration with provincial agriculture departments and presented through interactive maps, provincial summaries and links to detailed crop reports. Historical data is also available for year-over-year comparisons and trend analysis.

According to Cereals Canada, the report is designed to provide domestic and international customers with timely information on environmental conditions and crop development that may affect wheat production and quality throughout the growing season.

Across the Prairie provinces, spring wheat seeding has advanced significantly following periods of favorable weather, although conditions have varied by region.

In Alberta, dry conditions early in the reporting period allowed producers to make substantial progress before widespread rains arrived near the end of May. Provincial spring wheat seeding reached 96% completion, with seeding nearly finished in the South and Central regions. The Peace region remained the least advanced at 85%.

Crop development in Alberta was limited by dry weather followed by cooler temperatures accompanying recent rainfall. Spring cereals ranged from the two-leaf stage to early tillering. Recent precipitation improved soil moisture conditions substantially, with surface soil moisture rated 80% good-to-excellent, well above the province’s five-year average of 54%.

Saskatchewan also experienced variable rainfall, with some areas receiving significant precipitation. The Piapot region reported 60 millimeters of rain, while the Luseland and Manitou Lake areas received 54 millimeters and 52 millimeters, respectively.

Provincial spring wheat seeding in Saskatchewan reached 85% completion. Progress was slowest in the East-Central region at 76% and most advanced in the Northwestern region at 98%. Producers expect seeding to conclude quickly in many areas if favorable weather continues.

Topsoil moisture conditions remained generally stable across Saskatchewan. Cropland topsoil moisture was rated 8% surplus, 82% adequate, 9% short and 1% very short.

In Manitoba, warm and dry weather accelerated fieldwork despite uneven precipitation across the province. Some areas received only light rainfall, while localized storms brought heavier accumulations to portions of the Eastern, Interlake and Southwest regions.

Spring wheat seeding in Manitoba reached 88% completion. The Northwest region remained the least advanced at 55%, while the Central region led the province at 98%.

The earliest planted spring wheat fields in Manitoba had reached the two- to three-leaf stage.

Cereals Canada will continue updating the Growing Season Progress Report every two weeks as the 2026 Prairie wheat crop advances toward harvest.
