The Farm Safety Partnership Advisory Committee of the Health and Safety Authority is urging farmers to prioritize tractor safety during Tractor Safety Week beginning May 25, as vehicle-related incidents remain the leading cause of work-related fatalities in agriculture in Ireland.

The campaign comes as tractors continue to be linked to serious and fatal farm incidents. Over the past 10 years, 38 tractor-related fatalities were recorded on farms, while vehicle-related incidents remain the leading cause of work-related deaths in agriculture.

Organizers said the campaign will focus on practical measures farmers can take to reduce risks associated with tractor use. Key areas include machinery maintenance, safe operation practices, visibility awareness and the dangers of fatigue.

The initiative also will highlight risks faced by older farmers and young people working around tractors and farm machinery.

Campaign materials encourage farmers to keep tractors properly maintained and free from hazards, remain alert while operating machinery and pay close attention to blind spots and visibility concerns.

A central part of the campaign is promoting the HSA’s “Tractor Safety and You” publication, which provides guidance on the safe use of tractors and other farm equipment.

The week-long effort will include media outreach, social media activity and support from farm organizations and industry stakeholders.
