Businesses and homes in Decatur, Michigan were evacuated for several hours on January 10, 2026 due to fear of a grain fire after silo sensors warned of elevated temperatures. Amtrak rail service was also disrupted.

The evacuation order lasted from around 2 p.m. to 54:30 p.m. of the same day.

No fire was found in the silo, though officials continued to monitor it overnight. The silo was located in a processing and storage facility operated by Cargill.

The evacuation effort caused the cancellation of some Amtrak trains from Chicago to Pontiac, with buses taking passengers along the route to all normal train stops.
