From OSHA inspections to confined space entry protocols, CONVEY‘25 delivered focused, high-level training for grain handling and processing professionals. The event was hosted by the Grain Elevator and Processing Society, National Grain and Feed Association, and GEAPS Media Group.

Operations managers, safety leaders, maintenance supervisors, and engineers convened July 14-16 in Omaha, NE for regulatory updates, technical instruction and equipment-focused strategy.

FOCUS ON OSHA AND REGULATORY PREPAREDNESS
A detailed session on OSHA’s Grain Handling Standard, 29 CFR 1910.272, outlined enforcement trends and practical steps for compliance. Presenters walked through documentation requirements, inspection processes and expectations around confined space entry and lockout procedures. Legal experts provided real-world examples of how facilities are cited and what corrective actions hold up during follow-up inspections.

BIN ENTRY HAZARDS AND EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Speakers addressed the full scope of grain bin entry risks, including bridging, compaction and instability. Sessions focused on evaluating grain condition from outside the bin, setting up fall protection and retrieval systems and managing emergency response. Attendees reviewed recent incidents that underscored how small oversights during entry often lead to serious injury or death.

DUST CONTROL AND HOUSEKEEPING PLANS
Dust mitigation strategies were presented in both technical sessions and exhibitor demonstrations. Topics included dust collection system design, routine cleaning procedures and how to build and maintain a formal housekeeping plan. Presenters emphasized early removal, proper documentation and identifying critical accumulation points near spouting, belts and floor areas.

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE AND EQUIPMENT MONITORING
Multiple sessions focused on using sensors and routine inspections to catch issues before they lead to downtime. Attendees learned how to monitor belt alignment, plug conditions and bearing temperatures, and how to structure inspections around wear zones in bucket elevators, conveyors and receiving systems. Real examples highlighted where early action prevented structural failure and production loss.

TRAINING AND SHIFT SAFETY
Sessions on workforce management focused on daily safety communication, onboarding and shift transition protocols. Recommendations included task-specific checklists, job shadowing and reinforcement strategies for crews with mixed experience levels.
