“Cooling grain to 55 degrees F or cooler significantly reduces the insect population,” explains Karcher. “At sufficiently cool temperatures, insects enter a state of hibernation and cannot harm the stored crop. The extraction of heat and moisture also prevents the spread of mold and the associated contamination with mycotoxins.”
